The festive season is bringing good news for students as schools in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, are all set to remain closed for up to 12 days for Diwali 2025. In Rajasthan, the state government has even advanced the holiday schedule to start earlier than planned, giving students an extended festive break.
I’m writing about this update because it’s something that directly affects thousands of students, teachers, and parents across northern India. Every year, schools plan their festive holidays differently depending on the state’s calendar, and this time, Rajasthan has made a key change to its Diwali schedule. Such announcements help families plan travel, festive shopping, and celebrations without worrying about last-minute academic commitments. For students, it’s the perfect time to balance relaxation with light revision before classes resume. Let’s take a closer look at what the new Diwali holiday order says and how it affects schools across major states.
Diwali 2025: Rajasthan Schools’ Holiday Dates Announced
As per the official order issued by Sitaram Jat, Director of Secondary Education, Rajasthan, all government and private schools in the state will observe Diwali holidays from October 13 to October 27, 2025. The total duration remains 12 days, including Sunday, October 12, which means schools will reopen on October 28, 2025 (Tuesday).
Earlier, the holidays were scheduled from October 16 to October 27, but the education department decided to advance the dates to start three days earlier. The reason behind the shift is to align school holidays with local festive timings and community events, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where early Diwali celebrations begin with Dhanteras and Chhoti Diwali preparations.
Districts Covered Under the New Holiday Order
All schools—both government and private—in the following divisions of Rajasthan will remain closed during this 12-day festive break:
- Jaipur Division
- Jodhpur Division
- Bikaner Division
- Udaipur Division
- Ajmer Division
- Kota Division
This means students across nearly every district of Rajasthan will enjoy an early start to their Diwali holidays this year.
Schools in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar Also Announce Holiday Schedule
Apart from Rajasthan, schools in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have also released their Diwali holiday timetables. In both states, schools are expected to remain closed for 10 to 12 days, depending on the district-level calendar approved by the respective education departments.
In Uttar Pradesh, many schools will remain closed from October 14 to October 25, covering the festive period from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj. Similarly, in Bihar, several districts have announced school holidays from October 13 to October 24, in line with the state’s cultural and religious calendar.
Parents are advised to check with their child’s school notice board or official WhatsApp groups, as private schools may adjust reopening dates slightly based on internal schedules.
Why the Change Matters
Advancing the holidays by a few days may seem minor, but for teachers and students, it makes a significant difference. In Rajasthan, many families start preparing for Diwali early, especially in towns like Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur where community fairs, melas, and puja events begin days before the festival. The new dates will reduce absenteeism and make sure that learning resumes smoothly after the festive season.
For students, this long break is a welcome opportunity to relax, spend time with family, and take part in traditional celebrations. Teachers, too, get time to prepare lesson plans for the upcoming mid-session and conduct post-holiday assessments efficiently.
Tips for Students During the Diwali Break

- Help parents with festive preparations—it’s a great way to learn teamwork
- Avoid excessive use of firecrackers and keep celebrations safe and eco-friendly
- Try to read a short story or complete pending homework to stay in touch with studies
