A district-level one-day sports meet was organised on Wednesday at the Outdoor Stadium near SBI (Main) in Kurnool, bringing together students from across the district for a full day of athletic competition. The event was held as per the directions of the State Project Director, Andhra Pradesh Samagra Shiksha, Amaravati, and took place in the presence of District Education Officer Y Samuel Paul, who formally oversaw the proceedings.
I am writing about this sports meet because such events play an important role in shaping students beyond the classroom. Sports help build discipline, teamwork and confidence, especially for school children studying in government institutions. In districts like Kurnool, where many students come from rural backgrounds, opportunities to participate in organised sports at the district level can be truly life-changing. These meets also help teachers and officials identify talent at the grassroots level. More than just medals and certificates, such programmes encourage a culture of fitness and healthy competition among young students, which is equally important for their overall growth.
Event Organised Under Samagra Shiksha Guidelines
The sports meet was conducted under the Samagra Shiksha programme, a central initiative aimed at improving school education and providing equal learning opportunities. Following the instructions of the State Project Director from Amaravati, district authorities ensured that the event was held smoothly and on time.
The programme began at 8:00 AM with proper arrangements for students, officials and supporting staff. The venue, the Outdoor Stadium near SBI Main in Kurnool, was chosen to accommodate a large number of participants and events.
Presence of District Education Officer Adds Encouragement
District Education Officer Y Samuel Paul attended the event and interacted with students and teachers. His presence gave a big boost to the participants, many of whom were competing at the district level for the first time.
Officials said that such encouragement from senior education officers helps students feel recognised and motivated. The DEO also reviewed the arrangements and appreciated the efforts of teachers and organisers who worked to make the event successful.
Wide Participation from Schools Across the District
Students from different mandals and schools across Kurnool district took part in the one-day sports meet. Both boys and girls competed with great enthusiasm in various athletic and field events.
Some of the common events included:
- Running races of different distances
- Long jump and high jump
- Shot put and other field events
- Team games at school level
Teachers accompanied the students and managed team coordination throughout the day.
Focus on Physical Fitness and Grassroots Talent
Officials explained that the main aim of organising such district-level sports meets is not just competition but also to promote physical fitness among students. With increasing screen time and academic pressure, regular sports activities help children stay active and alert.
Another key objective is to identify promising talent at the school and district level. Students who perform well in these events may get opportunities to participate in higher-level competitions in the future.
Smooth Conduct and Positive Response
The event concluded peacefully with officials expressing satisfaction over the discipline and sportsmanship shown by students. Parents and local residents who visited the stadium also appreciated the effort taken by the education department to promote sports among school children.
Organisers said that arrangements for drinking water, first aid and basic safety were in place to ensure the well-being of all participants during the event.
