The partnerships aim to bring in expert knowledge, training tools, and classroom innovations that can make these subjects more engaging and easier to understand.

I’m writing about this because when it comes to school education, especially in subjects like maths and science, we often focus too much on exam results and not enough on how learning actually happens. Many students lose interest in these subjects early on because they don’t understand the basics or they don’t get proper guidance. So, when a state government joins hands with organisations that have ground-level experience in fixing these gaps, it’s worth paying attention to. This move can directly impact how children learn in classrooms and how teachers teach complex topics. If implemented properly, it can set an example for other states too.

Key Details of the Agreements

The Maharashtra School Education Department signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) recently:

  • First MoU: With Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)
  • Second MoU: With the non-profit organisation Navnirmiti

Both these partners are known for their work in improving science and maths education at school level. The MoUs focus on developing teaching materials, teacher training, and hands-on learning models for government-run and aided schools.

Why Focus on Maths and Science?

Maths and science form the backbone of analytical thinking. But in India, many students fear these subjects because of the way they are taught. According to ASER reports, a large percentage of students in Class 8 are unable to solve simple division problems. Science, too, is often taught from textbooks without any real-world connection.

The Maharashtra government is trying to change this. With help from TIFR and Navnirmiti, schools will get access to:

  • Better classroom experiments
  • Learning kits and visual aids
  • Teacher handbooks and resource materials
  • In-service teacher training
  • Evaluation tools that go beyond rote memorisation

Role of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)

TIFR has a long-standing reputation for excellence in science and research. Under this MoU, they will support schools by developing innovative science teaching aids, lab experiments, and simple science models that students can try out even in low-resource settings. The idea is to make science feel like something students can observe and explore, not just read about.

Role of Navnirmiti

Navnirmiti is an NGO that works mainly in maths education. Their approach is based on making maths logical, fun, and hands-on. Under the agreement, they will help design tools that break down complicated maths into simple, step-by-step learning modules. They will also conduct regular teacher training sessions across districts, especially in rural and tribal areas.

How This Will Help Teachers and Students

  • Teachers will be trained in new teaching methods that encourage student participation
  • Students will get to experience maths and science through practical activities instead of just theory
  • Schools will be equipped with low-cost models and kits, which can be used in classrooms daily
  • More emphasis will be placed on foundational understanding, which is key for higher studies

This is especially useful in rural schools where the teacher-student ratio is high, and resources are limited. With better training and materials, even one teacher can manage a class more effectively.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar College, a prominent institution committed to the educational upliftment of marginalized communities, celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with grandeur and enthusiasm. The event was graced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai as chief guests. The ceremony was presided over by Bhante Arya Nagarjun Surai Sasai, President of the Deekshabhoomi Memorial Committee, with several distinguished guests including Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, Justice Chandrashekhar of the Bombay High Court, and committee members Dr. Kamaltai Gavai, Sudhir Phulzhele, and others in attendance.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Fadnavis praised the college’s 60-year journey, highlighting its crucial role in delivering quality education to the underprivileged. He honored the contributions of pioneers such as Dadasaheb Gaikwad, Dadasaheb Gavai, Dadasaheb Kumbhare, and Sadanand Phulzhele in building the college’s foundation. Recalling historical milestones like the arrival of Dr. Ambedkar’s ashes in Nagpur during the Dhamma Deeksha Silver Jubilee in 1981, Gavai remarked on the city’s rich tradition of unity and respect for Ambedkarite values. He concluded his speech by reciting the powerful poem “Bhim Vandana” written by renowned poet Suresh Bhat.
