Mumbai: The Maharashtra Government has announced a major structural change in the field of vocational education by dissolving the State Apex Council formed under the chairmanship of the Minister of Higher & Technical Education and the District Executive Committees headed by respective District Collectors. This decision has been taken by modifying the Government Resolution issued on 11th October 2007.
According to the government, all key responsibilities related to vocational education and training are now being efficiently managed under the Maharashtra State Skill, Vocational Education & Training Board, which functions under the Department of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship. Keeping in mind the rapid industrial growth, technological advancements, and changing employment demands, the board has been consistently upgrading and expanding various vocational courses.
At present, the board offers full-time and part-time skill-based programs across different sectors with durations ranging from 6 months to 2 years, helping students get direct entry into industry jobs. Additionally, procedures for the establishment and expansion of private ITI institutions have been simplified and made more industry-friendly.
Since all policy-making and administrative powers are now centralized within the Skill Development department, the government stated that the need for the previously formed councils and committees no longer remains relevant. Therefore, they have now been officially abolished.
This step is being seen as a significant move towards streamlining policy execution and strengthening institutional frameworks within the skill development sector. The government believes that this restructured system will provide better skill training, employment opportunities for the youth, and will develop a workforce that aligns with the evolving needs of industries.
