Nagpur to Get a 615-Bed Hospital with Super-Specialty Medical Courses

Nagpur hospital announcement with details

▪️ Upgradation of Dr. Ambedkar Hospital and Research Centre
▪️ 110 new postgraduate seats and 41 new super-specialty seats to be created

Nagpur, Nov 21: To ensure high-quality medical services for patients in Nagpur and to introduce new postgraduate and super-specialty courses for medical students, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had issued directions to the Medical Education Department. Following his guidance, the government has now approved the establishment of new postgraduate and super-specialty courses along with a modern 615-bed hospital. These facilities will be added by upgrading the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital and Research Centre affiliated with Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital.

The Medical Education and Drugs Department recently issued a government resolution in this regard. As per the order, a total of 30 new courses will be added, including 19 postgraduate and 11 super-specialty programs. This expansion will create 110 new postgraduate seats and 41 new super-specialty seats.

Additionally, the government has approved the establishment of a 615-bed hospital, which will include hospital administration, management departments, a dental OPD, and facilities related to these courses.

With these new medical facilities, Nagpur will gain significant additional super-specialty healthcare capacity. The upgraded institution has also been renamed Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Super Speciality Institute of Medical Education and Research (BASIMER).

For this project, a non-recurring expenditure of about ₹989.03 crore and a recurring expenditure of ₹176.62 crore for the first three years has been approved. In total, the government has sanctioned ₹1,165.65 crore for the project, along with annual recurring expenditure of ₹78.80 crore thereafter.

The financial responsibility for the project will be shared between the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department and the Medical Education and Drugs Department in a 75% and 25% ratio respectively. Of the Medical Education Department’s share (75%), ₹874.23 crore will be provided under the Social Justice Department’s Scheduled Caste Component Programme.

Once the Social Justice Department’s share of project expenditure is completed, the Medical Education and Drugs Department will take over responsibility for both recurring and non-recurring costs.

The government will soon initiate the process of creating the necessary posts for the new facility. A committee headed by the Chief Secretary has been instructed to begin this process immediately, complete it on time and ensure that construction required for the institutional upgradation progresses as per schedule. The possibility of implementing the project partially or fully through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model will also be examined. Construction will be carried out by the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA).

Earlier, the project faced delays due to land-related issues, but those have now been resolved, giving real momentum to the development.
