President Droupadi Murmu attended the convocation ceremony of Kumaun University in Nainital, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday. The event marked a proud moment for the university as the President, who is also the Visitor to all central and state universities, honoured meritorious students with medals and degrees. Her presence brought excitement and inspiration to hundreds of young graduates stepping into their next chapter of life.
I am writing about this event because it reflects how the highest office in India continues to encourage education and youth empowerment. Presidential visits to universities are not just ceremonial; they symbolise national recognition of the importance of higher education in building a progressive society. President Murmu’s words during such events often touch on values like inclusivity, hard work, and social responsibility—qualities that today’s students must uphold. In states like Uttarakhand, where education is a major path to social upliftment, such moments remind us that academic success must go hand in hand with service to the community and sustainable growth.
President Murmu’s Address to Students
In her address, President Murmu congratulated all graduating students and emphasised that education should not only lead to employment but also contribute to nation-building. She encouraged the youth to develop a spirit of innovation, compassion, and environmental responsibility, especially in a state known for its natural beauty and fragile ecosystem.
The President highlighted that students from hill states like Uttarakhand have a special role to play in sustainable development and in preserving the environment while pursuing progress. She urged the young graduates to become responsible citizens who blend modern knowledge with traditional wisdom.
Recognition of Academic Excellence
During the ceremony, President Murmu awarded gold medals and degrees to students who excelled in various fields. The university campus witnessed a vibrant atmosphere as students, faculty members, and families gathered to celebrate the academic achievements of the graduating class.
Vice Chancellor Prof. N.K. Pandey extended a warm welcome to the President and shared the university’s progress in the fields of research, innovation, and community service. He noted that Kumaun University, with its campuses in Nainital, Almora, and Bhimtal, has been steadily growing as a centre for higher learning in Uttarakhand.
Focus on Sustainable Education
President Murmu also spoke about the importance of aligning education with local challenges. She stressed that Uttarakhand’s universities should work on solutions for issues like climate change, disaster management, and livelihood opportunities in hill regions. Her speech reflected her deep understanding of how education can empower remote communities and prevent migration by creating local opportunities.
The President encouraged students to pursue careers that not only benefit them personally but also bring value to society. She also applauded the university’s efforts in promoting research on Himalayan ecology and local traditions.
Role of Kumaun University
Founded in 1973, Kumaun University has played a crucial role in shaping higher education in the region. With over 160 affiliated colleges, it serves students across Kumaon and parts of Garhwal. The university has also been recognised for its initiatives in women’s education and rural development projects.
Under the guidance of the Uttarakhand government and the University Grants Commission, Kumaun University continues to strengthen its academic programmes and research facilities. Its focus on sustainable education aligns well with the vision shared by President Murmu during the convocation.
Voices from the Campus
Students expressed their excitement at receiving their degrees from the President of India herself. Many shared that the experience was not only motivating but also a reminder of their responsibility towards the nation. Faculty members said that President Murmu’s emphasis on values and environment would inspire the university to expand its outreach and innovation programmes.
