Chapter 8 of the NCERT Class 10 Sanskrit book Shemushi is titled सूक्तयः, which translates to “Wise Sayings” or “Proverbs.” This chapter is a collection of ancient Sanskrit verses full of practical wisdom, moral values, and timeless life lessons. Each verse has a strong meaning and teaches principles such as humility, kindness, self-control, and truthfulness. It is different from story-based chapters, as it focuses on short poetic sayings with deep messages.
I decided to write about this chapter because सूक्तयः is not just useful for Sanskrit exams, but also relevant in everyday life. Students often think Sanskrit is difficult, but when we study chapters like this, we realise that Sanskrit is a language full of life values. Personally, I found this chapter to be one of the most meaningful parts of the book because it covers topics that we can actually apply. These verses are useful in essays, speeches, and moral discussions. Also, this chapter helps improve vocabulary and understanding of Sanskrit grammar.
Meaning and Message of Each सूक्ति
Here’s a quick explanation of some of the सूक्तयः included in this chapter and their meanings:
| सूक्ति | Meaning in English | Message |
|---|---|---|
| सत्यं वद | Speak the truth | Always be truthful |
| धर्मं चर | Follow righteousness | Do what is morally right |
| मातृदेवो भव | Be like a god to your mother | Respect and serve your mother |
| पितृदेवो भव | Be like a god to your father | Honour your father’s efforts |
| अतिथिदेवो भव | Treat guests like gods | Always show hospitality |
Each line may look short, but it carries a lot of depth. For example, सत्यं वद is not just about speaking the truth—it also means standing by truth in difficult situations.
