The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced that it will grant equivalence to Class 12 certificates issued by different school education boards across India. This decision is expected to ease the process for students applying to higher education institutions, competitive exams, or jobs, where discrepancies between boards often create hurdles. By setting clear equivalence standards, NCERT aims to ensure that certificates from CBSE, state boards, CISCE, and other recognised boards carry equal weight.
I chose to write about this because the issue of certificate equivalence has troubled students and parents for years. Many students face unnecessary challenges during college admissions or while applying for scholarships, simply because their board certificates are not treated as equal.
This move by NCERT is significant because it not only removes confusion but also helps bring transparency and fairness in the education system. More importantly, it promotes inclusivity by recognising the diversity of school boards in India while assuring students that their hard work is valued equally. In a competitive education environment, clarity and uniformity in certification can make a big difference for lakhs of young learners.
Why NCERT’s Equivalence Decision Matters
- Removes discrimination between different school boards
- Helps students in college admissions and competitive exams
- Brings uniformity in recognising Class 12 certificates
- Reduces paperwork and delays for students applying across states
What Will Change for Students
- Certificates from all recognised boards will be treated equally.
- Higher education institutions will no longer question the “validity” of Class 12 marksheets from certain state boards.
- Students moving from one state to another for college will have a smoother transition.
- This move will also help in government job recruitments where board certificates are evaluated.
Broader Impact on Education
India has more than 50 recognised school boards, each with slightly different syllabi and evaluation methods. Students often find themselves at a disadvantage simply because their board is considered “tougher” or “easier” compared to others. By granting equivalence, NCERT is ensuring that all students are assessed on equal grounds. It also aligns with the National Education Policy’s (NEP 2020) vision of creating a more inclusive and standardised education framework.
