IIT Madras, one of India's premier technical educational institutions, recently awarded degrees and diplomas to 1,460 students through its BS Degree Programme during a special convocation ceremony. Students from various parts of the country, as well as from abroad, successfully completed the course. Notably, many of these graduates come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, a fact that clearly highlights the inclusive nature of this online education system.
According to data released by IIT Madras, a total of 1,460 students received degrees and diplomas at this year's convocation. Among them, 634 earned a BS degree, 197 a BSc degree, 604 a diploma, and 25 a postgraduate diploma. Additionally, 173 students were awarded 'Academic Distinction' and 'Merit Certificates' for their outstanding academic achievements.
One of the significant aspects of this conference is the social and economic diversity of the students. Among the degree recipients, 221 come from families with an annual income of less than ₹1 lakh, while 101 students belong to families with an annual income ranging between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakhs.
These figures demonstrate that online higher education is becoming a powerful vehicle for social change, not only a technological innovation. Through various scholarships and CSR support, thousands of students have gained the opportunity to chase their education at a low cost or even for free.
Speaking at the convocation, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, said that Data Science, Electronic Systems, Aeronautics and Space Technology, and Management are crucial sectors for India's future development.
According to him, these programs are cultivating skilled human resources who will play an important role in the country's future technological advancement. He further added that these students are not only degree holders, but also innovators and problem-solvers of tomorrow.
Students of this program have not only earned their degrees but have also demonstrated their skills in various national and international competitions.
Shriprasad, Saranath, and Shruthi, students of the BS in Data Science and Applications program, secured first place in the EconUnion Validation Challenge, winning a prize of ₹1 lakh and an opportunity to visit Switzerland.
Meanwhile, a student named A.K. Deepankar won a prize of $20,000 at the RevenueCat Shipaton 2026 Hackathon by developing an app called ‘Bloom’.
Additionally, students from this program have achieved success in various competitions organised by Mark Rober (Jugaad Contest), ISRO, IIT Bombay, Anthropic, and Google.
At one time, many did not consider online degrees a significant alternative to traditional education. However, IIT Madras's BS Degree Programme has proven that with proper planning, a high-quality curriculum, and the use of technology, online education can also be world-class. This action has provided higher education opportunities to many students for whom participating in traditional campus-based education would have been difficult.
I am writing about this because the importance of online education in higher education is growing day by day. This initiative by IIT Madras has proven that geographical distance and financial constraints are no longer major barriers to education. Such programs are opening up new possibilities, especially for students who are pursuing another degree or continuing their studies alongside a job.
