New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to grant an urgent hearing on a petition seeking immediate intervention over alleged police excesses against CJP protesters in Delhi.
During the mentioning of the case, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant refused the request for urgent listing, stating, “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time.” The Bench also declined to examine videos cited by the petitioners at this preliminary stage, observing that the matter should proceed through the normal judicial process.
The petition alleged that police used excessive force while dealing with the protesters and sought directions for an independent inquiry into the incident. However, the Court did not issue any interim relief, making it clear that the case would be considered as per the regular listing procedure.
The matter has drawn attention amid ongoing discussions on the rights of citizens to protest peacefully and the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies in maintaining public order. The Supreme Court’s decision underscores its view that not every matter qualifies for urgent hearing and that established judicial procedures must be followed.
