Maharashtra Govt’s Big Relief for Parents: Schools Can’t Force

According to new guidelines, private schools can no longer, under any circumstances, compel parents to purchase uniforms, textbooks, notebooks, or other educational supplies from specific designated shops. The Maharashtra government has delivered a piece of highly welcome news, offering significant relief to parents. For quite some time, numerous families had been complaining that certain schools mandated the purchase of supplies exclusively from their own designated shops or vendors—a practice that resulted in unnecessary additional expenses. The government has now taken a firm stance against this practice.

I am writing about this issue because the cost of schooling has become a major financial burden for many families. The prices of everything—uniforms, books, and stationery—are on the rise. Furthermore, if parents are forced to make purchases from specific locations, they are left with absolutely no freedom of choice. In my opinion, this decision will not only result in financial savings but will also enhance transparency within the school system.

In the past, numerous complaints were lodged alleging that certain schools were exerting pressure on parents. In many instances, schools mandated that uniforms be purchased exclusively from authorised shops, textbooks be procured from specific publishers, and supplies be obtained directly from the school campus—practices that placed an additional financial load on various families.

The Maharashtra Education Department has explicitly clarified that no school may compel its students or their parents to purchase supplies from a specific store. Parents are now free to purchase school uniforms, books, notebooks, stationery, and other educational materials from the shops of their choice. Therefore, this will enhance opportunities to purchase these items at competitive prices.

The government has issued specific directives to school management committees: a resolution must be passed within the management committee explicitly stating that no form of coercion is permissible; the School Management Committee (SMC) must formally adopt this same decision; a coordinating officer must be appointed; and a separate email ID must be created for the purpose of resolving any irregularities or grievances. The government has stated that schools must clearly communicate these new regulations and the rights of parents. In my opinion, people are often unaware of rules even when they exist; therefore, raising awareness is crucial.
