A significant update has come out for both children and parents, as Maharashtra has released a major announcement regarding RTE admissions for the year 2026. The State Department of Primary Education has stated that, for the current academic year, over 1.05 lakh children have been selected for admission under the 25% reservation quota. This selection pool includes children from the General category as well as those who are specially-abled (Divyang). Students may begin applying today, April 11, and the deadline for submitting applications is April 20, 2026.
We are addressing this topic today because, unless parents fully understand the entire application process, they will be unable to take the necessary steps effectively. We have observed that, quite often, valuable opportunities are missed at the last minute due to haste. Therefore, in this post, we have outlined the entire process in a simple manner, covering all key dates and necessary actions.
For the current academic year, a total of 2,89,385 applications were submitted for RTE admissions, against a total of 1,14,826 available seats. This process involved 870 private schools. Due to this massive volume of applications, the selection process was conducted via a lottery system, the results of which were published on April 6, 2026.
This year, 1,05,229 children in the general category were selected under the RTE quota, alongside 582 children with special needs (Divyang or specially-abled). Conversely, a significant number of students remain on the waiting list: 86,004 in the general category and 30 among children with special needs. These figures clearly indicate that the competition was quite intense.
The admission process for students selected for the 2026 academic session has commenced today, April 11, 2026; the deadline for submitting applications is April 20, 2026. To ensure the proper execution of this admission process, guardians are required to visit the designated office in person to complete document verification. Additionally, they must submit the necessary documents to the Group Education Officer or the Administrative Officer. Upon completion of the verification process, an online confirmation will be issued, after which the admission formalities at the respective school can be finalised.
In this regard, the Department of Education has provided some important information for parents. The Department has announced that it has commenced sending SMS notifications to parents' mobile phones. However, officials from the Department have explicitly stated that one should not rely solely on these SMS messages. It is imperative that the parents of every student visit the official portal to check the status of their children; only then can they obtain accurate confirmation.
