Major Announcement for Maratha Students: Maharashtra Government Introduces Educational Benefits Similar to Those for OBCs

The Maharashtra government has taken a decision regarding students from the Maratha community. The state government has announced that, starting from the 2026-27 academic year, Maratha students will be eligible for the same educational benefits and welfare schemes as students from the Other Backwards Classes (OBC) category.

This decision extends access to scholarships, training programs, admission concessions, and various other government benefits to Maratha students, potentially offering direct advantages to higher education and skill development.

I am writing about this because the issue of Maratha reservation and educational opportunities has been a subject of long discussion in Maharashtra. Many students and parents are excited to understand the specific benefits that appear from this new decision and how it might impact their futures.

On Friday, the General Administration Department of the Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution (GR). This directive instructs various departments to extend educational and welfare benefits to students from the Maratha community that are similar to those provided to OBC students.

The order applies to multiple government departments, including School Education, Sports, Higher and Technical Education, Medical Education, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Skill Development.

Under the new decision, students from the Maratha community will receive several significant benefits.

These include:

1. Various government scholarships for primary and higher education.
2. Educational financial assistance similar to that provided to OBC students.
3. Special concessions for admission and training at government and private ITIs.
4. Access to skill development training programs.
5. Opportunities to participate in motor driving training schemes.
6. Inclusion in various educational and welfare projects.
7. Financial assistance for professional education.
8. Benefits from other welfare schemes are related to those in the OBC category.

Students from the Maratha community who secure admission to engineering or medical colleges following the formal admission process will also receive benefits similar to those available to OBC students. This will increase opportunities for receiving financial assistance upon admission to higher education and may help the financial load on many families.

The government has clearly told that this decision will be applied starting from the 2026-27 academic year. Therefore, the Finance and Planning Divisions have been directed to arrange for the necessary fund allocations. At the same time, the availability of good funds will be secured for the smooth execution of the projects.

The Maratha community had long demanded inclusion in the OBC category. However, the government stated that direct addition to the OBC list is not possible under the current legal framework. In this environment, the government has decided, as an alternative measure, to extend the same educational and welfare benefits enjoyed by OBC students to Maratha students.
