UNU Internship 2027: Monthly Stipend and Eligibility Details

Students and young professionals looking for international exposure may find the United Nations University (UNU) Junior Fellows Internship an interesting opportunity. The six-month programme will place selected candidates at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, where they can gain practical experience in research, writing, administration and event coordination.

The Spring 2027 internship is scheduled to run from 1 March to 27 August 2027. It also offers a monthly stipend to eligible interns who do not receive financial support from other sources.

Working with a United Nations institution can provide valuable insight into how international organisations operate and contribute to global development. This internship is particularly relevant for postgraduate students and recent graduates who want to build experience in research, policy-related work and communication.

However, applicants should carefully check the eligibility conditions and financial arrangements before considering the programme. The application deadline mentioned in the notice was 1 November 2026, which has already passed.

The Junior Fellows Internship is organised by the Office of the Rector at the United Nations University. Selected fellows will support different activities, including administrative research, preparing written briefs, project planning, proofreading reports and coordinating conferences, lectures and other events. The programme is designed to help participants apply the knowledge gained through postgraduate studies in a professional environment.

Candidates must be pursuing or have recently completed a postgraduate qualification, such as a master's or doctoral degree. Those who completed their postgraduate studies within the two years before applying may also be considered. The notice specifies an age limit of 32 years or below, along with no more than five years of work experience in the relevant field.

Applicants should have a strong command of written and spoken English, along with good research, writing and analytical abilities. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and other computer applications is also important. An interest in the work of the United Nations and international development will be an advantage.

The internship will last approximately six months, from 1 March to 27 August 2027. Fellows will generally work full-time, Monday to Friday, during UNU's regular working hours. The programme offers a monthly stipend to interns who do not receive financial support from other institutions. The amount depends on the applicable rate for the duty station and is intended to help cover basic living expenses, including commuting costs.

Selected fellows working on-site will receive office space and access to relevant facilities. They will also be entitled to 1.5 days of leave per month. Access to the university's library and gym facilities is another benefit mentioned in the programme information.

Applications for the Spring 2027 intake were scheduled to close on 1 November 2026 at 11:59 pm Japan Standard Time. Therefore, this application window has now closed. Interested candidates can visit the official UNU website to check details about future internship opportunities and upcoming application rounds.
