Gen Z's New Protest Movement Reaches Delhi

A protest movement in India's capital, Delhi, has recently become the focus of nationwide attention. Known as the "Cockroach Janata Party" (CJP), this movement has come out primarily around the objections and frustrations of young people, as well as various controversies surrounding the education system.

Unhappy regarding question paper leaks, examination irregularities, and a lack of fault in the education sector has now spilt onto the streets. What began as a satirical campaign on social media rapidly transformed into a real political protest.

This movement originated from a remark made by the Chief Justice of India. Allegations turned out that the comment compared young people to cockroaches, sparking deep debate on social media. So, Abhijeet Dipke, an Indian youth studying in the United States, posed a question on the social media platform X: "What would happen if all the cockroaches gathered together?" That post quickly went viral, eventually giving rise to a symbolic movement known as the "Cockroach Janata Party."

According to the participants of the movement, controversies regarding question paper leaks and evaluation processes in various national and state-level examinations have repeatedly surfaced in recent years. Key issues include inconsistencies in marking during school board exams, question paper leaks in various competitive examinations, a lack of accountability in the education sector, uncertainty regarding job opportunities, and the rising cost of education.

The Cockroach Janata Party called for a gathering at Delhi's Jantar Mantar using the slogan "All Cockroaches Assemble." Responding to this call, students and young people from various parts of the country arrived in Delhi. 17 year old Saurabh Kushwaha from Madhya Pradesh is one of them; he recently passed his Class 12 exams and has come to the capital to protest against various issues torturing the education system.

The primary demand of the movement is the resignation of the Union Education Minister. The protesters claim that there has been a failure to take due responsibility regarding the series of controversies and irregularities in the education sector. They maintain that, given the questions being raised about the honesty of examinations, it is essential to ensure the responsibility of the concerned authorities.

India is home to one of the world's largest Gen Z populations. Many in this generation feel growing anxiety about their future and believe that educational reforms are needed, employment opportunities must be expanded, and they should have the right to express their views on government policies. Therefore, they are searching new ways to voice their concerns.

It is not just students who have participated in this movement; people from various professions have joined in as well. A delivery worker from the inner city of Delhi shared that he could not complete his own education due to financial conditions, yet he is worried about the future of the current generation of students. In his view, it is society's responsibility to support the students' legal demands.

As of the time of writing this report, no detailed official comments regarding the movement have been released. However, the protesters have stated that they will continue to protest peacefully in support of their demands. Meanwhile, the government and the ruling party have repeatedly claimed in the past that they are operating within the framework of the Constitution and the law.

I am writing about this issue because the growing discontent among India's younger generation has become a significant topic of social and political conversation. Today's youth are not content with only expressing their views on social media; instead, they are actively participating in movements and voicing their demands.

This phenomenon is not only a form of protest but also a reflection of how young people sense the country's education system, employment landscape, and democratic participation.
