The Department of Posts has announced 19 vacancies for Skilled Artisan and Tradesman positions at its Mail Motor Services unit in Kolkata. The recruitment offers opportunities across seven technical trades, including Motor Vehicle Mechanic, Motor Vehicle Electrician, Tyreman, Blacksmith, Painter, Upholsterer and Carpenter and Joiner.
Candidates who have passed Class 8 can also apply if they meet the relevant technical qualification and work experience requirements. Applications will be accepted through Speed Post, and the completed forms must reach the designated office by November 30, 2026, at 5 pm.
This recruitment could be a useful opportunity for people with practical experience in vehicle repair, electrical work and other workshop trades who want to work in a central government department. The posts are classified under Group C, and selected candidates will receive pay under Level 2 of the Pay Matrix.
However, applicants should not assume that an eighth-pass certificate alone is sufficient. Each trade has specific qualification conditions, and the Motor Vehicle Mechanic post also requires a valid heavy vehicle driving licence.
The Department of Posts has distributed the 19 vacancies across seven trades. Motor Vehicle Mechanic has the largest share, with eight posts, followed by four Motor Vehicle Electrician vacancies. There are two posts each for Tyreman and Blacksmith, while Painter, Upholsterer and Carpenter and Joiner have one vacancy apiece. The category-wise distribution includes 10 unreserved posts, four for SC candidates, one for ST candidates and four for OBC-NCL applicants.
Candidates must have passed Class 8 and possess either a certificate from a recognised technical institution in the relevant trade or at least one year of practical experience in that trade, as prescribed in the notification. Those applying for Motor Vehicle Mechanic must additionally hold a valid Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) driving licence or an equivalent authorisation to drive the required vehicle.
The age limit is generally 18 to 30 years, with applicable relaxation for eligible categories, including ex-servicemen. One detail needs particular attention: the newspaper clipping states that age will be calculated as on July 1, 2018. Since this is an unusual reference date for a 2026 recruitment, candidates should verify the correct age cut-off in the original official notification before applying.
The selected candidates will receive a basic pay in the range of ₹19,900 to ₹63,200 under Pay Level 2, along with admissible allowances such as dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance. The probation period will be one year. Selection will involve scrutiny of applications and a trade test to assess candidates' practical skills.
Unlike many recent government recruitments, this application process is offline. Candidates must prepare the application in the prescribed format on plain paper, attach the necessary certificates and supporting documents, and send the completed form through Speed Post. It must reach the Senior Manager, Mail Motor Services, 139, Beleghata Road, Kolkata – 700015, West Bengal, by November 30, 2026, before 5 pm. The notice states that no application fee will be charged.
Candidates interested in these posts should read the official notification carefully, particularly the trade-wise qualifications, age conditions and application instructions, before dispatching their forms.
