Mumbai Rain Alert: Are Schools, Colleges and Offices Open Today?

Due to continuous heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its surrounding areas, a decision has been made to keep all government, private, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run schools and colleges closed on Monday, July 6, 2026.

This decision follows the issuance of an 'Orange Alert' for the city by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, government and private offices remain open as usual. The administration has advised citizens to step out only if necessary.

All government, private, and BMC-run schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Monday, July 6, 2026. The BMC announced this decision on Sunday evening. According to the IMD forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 60 to 70 kmph are expected over the next 24 hours. This holiday has been declared with the utmost priority given to the safety of students.

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused waterlogging, uprooted trees, house collapses, and major traffic disruptions across various parts of Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). According to the administration, commuting could be risky for students in the heavy rain; therefore, a decision has been made to keep educational institutions closed.

You might be wondering if government and private offices will remain open. Yes, they are currently open and operating as usual. However, the BMC has requested citizens not to step out unnecessarily and has advised them to follow the instructions of the local administration should weather conditions decline.

The India Meteorological Department has stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Mumbai and adjoining areas over the next 24 hours. Warnings have also been issued regarding potential waterlogging, uprooting of trees, and disruptions to traffic movement in some areas due to strong winds and heavy rain.

It has been decided to keep educational institutions closed not only in Mumbai but also in several neighbouring districts. Anganwadis, Balwadis, and primary and secondary schools in Thane district have been shut down. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has also declared a holiday for all schools in the city.

Additionally, instructions have been issued to keep educational institutions in Palghar district closed. Holidays have also been declared for schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres in Pune district and Lonavala due to the forecast of heavy rainfall.

Heavy rainfall on Sunday led to multiple incidents across Mumbai and its surrounding areas. Reports have come out of house collapses, uprooted trees, and power-related issues in various locations. Strong winds caused trees to fall, disrupting traffic flow in many areas.

The Meteorological Department has stated that heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the next 24 hours. Monitoring the situation, the BMC and district administration may issue fresh directives as needed; therefore, students, parents, and the general public are advised to keep track of regular government updates.
