Proposal for Special College Assistance for Children of Single Mothers in Maharashtra

The Maharashtra government is currently formulating a thorough policy for single women. As part of this action, the state's Higher and Technical Education Department has decided to constitute a committee to explore the possibility of providing special assistance to the children of single mothers studying in colleges, universities, and technical educational institutions.

The government recognises that many of these students face social and financial challenges, and therefore, there is a need to create a more supportive environment for them.

This committee is being constituted at the initiative of Maharashtra's Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Chandrakant Patil. It will comprise government officials and experts working with single mothers and their children.

The committee's primary task will be to conduct a detailed review of the types of support systems that can be applied for the children of single mothers pursuing higher education. The Education Department will make further decisions based on the committee's recommendations.

Currently, the state does not possess comprehensive data regarding the exact number of children of single mothers. So, a proposal to include a separate category labelled "Children of Single Mothers" in college and university admission forms is being considered. According to the government, this will enable the collection of more accurate data in the future and facilitate the formulation of policies based on that information.

Dr. Shailendra Deolankar, Director of the Higher Education Department, stated that a recent survey identified approximately 14,000 students across various colleges and universities in the state who come from single-mother families.

However, he acknowledged that this figure might not be entirely accurate, as the actual number could be higher due to a lack of awareness and limitations in data collection. For this reason, the government is emphasising the collection of accurate data.

The government is focusing not only on data collection but also on raising awareness among educational institutions. As part of this initiative, a virtual session involving the heads of over 1,500 colleges and higher education institutions in Maharashtra will be organised next week.

Experts will discuss the real-world challenges faced by students from single-mother families and offer suggestions on how to create a more supportive environment for them.

The government is considering whether it is possible to prioritise students from single-mother families when allocating hostel seats. Many students come from remote areas to pursue their studies, and a lack of safe accommodation can impact their academic lives; therefore, if applied, this initiative could benefit many students.
