Due to the general law and order situation in Manipur, the state government has decided to keep all educational institutions closed from August 20 to August 23. According to the government directive, this closure applies to schools, colleges, higher education institutions, and universities.
Schools and other educational institutions affiliated with the Board of Secondary Education Manipur, the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur, and the CBSE are also covered by this decision. This directive applies to all types of educational institutions—government, government-aided, and private.
The government order states that the decision to keep educational institutions closed has been taken after considering the common law-and-order situation in the state.
In the directive issued by the Commissioner of Education (School), Ningthoujam Geoffrey, concerned officials have been instructed to communicate this decision to schools and educational institutions within their respective jurisdictions. In other words, this directive is not limited to any specific district or type of school; it applies to educational institutions across the entire state.
Normal life in several valley districts of Manipur has been disrupted during this period of decision-making. A 48-hour shutdown called by a Meitei group known as the 'Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation' (JFD) was continuing on Wednesday; the organization's primary demand is the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prior to the census.
Meitei organizations argue that the NRC is necessary to identify undocumented migrants who have entered Manipur from neighboring countries since 1951. Conversely, Kuki organizations claim that such demands are an attempt to label members of their community as undocumented immigrants as well.
The ongoing stress has also impacted census-related activities. Reports indicate that the student wing of the JFD has staged multiple protests over the past few days; these include the closure of the Directorate of Census Operations office in Imphal East and the disruption of operations at census training centres.
Among this situation, the appointments of supervisors, enumerators, and field trainers associated with the census training programme have been cancelled. Moirangthem Priyaroshni Devi, the Charge Officer/Sub-Divisional Officer of Lilong, Imphal West, announced this decision in a separate official order.
For students and parents in Manipur, the most important update right now is that educational institutions will remain closed from August 20 to August 23, in accordance with government directives.
Any new instructions regarding classes, examinations, or other academic activities will be communicated by the respective schools, colleges, or universities. Therefore, students should regularly check notices from their institutions as well as government updates.
