Major relief for existing Law Colleges for the 2026-27 academic session; BCI indicates that no further extension will ordinarily be granted

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has granted another extension to existing Centres of Legal Education (CLEs) across the country for submitting applications related to the extension or renewal of affiliation approval for the 2026-27 academic session.
With the latest decision, the deadline has been extended for the fourth time and will now remain open until August 31, 2026. The decision was communicated through a BCI circular issued on August 6, 2026.
Deadline Extended Four Times
The original deadline for the process was December 31, 2025. It was subsequently extended to:
* January 16, 2026 – First extension
* March 5, 2026 – Second extension
* July 31, 2026 – Third extension
* August 31, 2026 – Fourth and current deadline
The latest extension provides additional time to existing law colleges that could not complete the affiliation-related process within the earlier deadlines.
Why Has BCI Granted Another Extension?
According to the BCI communication, immediately closing the portal could have affected existing Centres of Legal Education that had the required documents but were unable to complete their applications due to technical or administrative difficulties.
Such a situation could potentially have affected the admission process for students during the 2026-27 academic session.
The extension has therefore been provided to enable eligible institutions to complete the required formalities within the revised deadline.
Who Can Benefit From the Extension?
The extension is applicable to existing Centres of Legal Education seeking continuation or renewal of approval for courses, sections and student intake that have already been sanctioned.
Institutions that have the necessary documents but were unable to complete the online application process may use the extended period to complete the required formalities, subject to the applicable BCI requirements.
However, the final decision will remain subject to verification, scrutiny and inspection by the BCI, wherever applicable.
Extension Does Not Permit New Courses or Increased Intake
The latest extension does not provide permission for:
* Establishment of a new Law College
* Introduction of new law courses
* Opening of additional sections
* Increase in sanctioned student intake
* Starting a new campus
The relaxation is primarily intended for the continuation or renewal of approval relating to already sanctioned courses and intake.
Submission of Application Does Not Mean Automatic Approval
The BCI has also made it clear that merely submitting an application, paying the prescribed fee or submitting an undertaking does not automatically amount to BCI approval.
Institutions will have to satisfy the prescribed requirements. Their applications may be subjected to verification, scrutiny and inspection before the approval process is completed.
The submission of incorrect or fabricated documents may also invite appropriate action.
Portal to Close After August 31
The revised deadline of August 31, 2026 is particularly significant for institutions whose affiliation or approval process is still pending.
The BCI has indicated that the portal will be closed after the revised deadline and that no further extension will ordinarily be granted.
Law colleges therefore have a limited window to complete their pending applications and comply with the prescribed requirements.
Status of Some National Law Universities
The affiliation and approval process has also attracted attention in the case of several prominent National Law Universities.
According to the report, Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Nava Raipur, and National Law University Odisha (NLUO), Cuttack, have received renewal.
Meanwhile, certain courses at institutions including National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru; National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal; Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli; and Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, were reported to be awaiting approval.

The decision is particularly important for students seeking admission to law programmes for the 2026-27 academic session.
