BCI Makes On-Site Inspection Mandatory Before Every Law College Affiliation

New Delhi: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has directed all universities and legal education institutions to conduct a mandatory on-site inspection before granting or renewing affiliation to any law college. The Council has clarified that affiliation decisions will no longer be based solely on documents submitted by institutions.

The decision follows a recent case in which a law college was found operating two shifts in a space significantly smaller than the prescribed norms. During the proceedings, the court disaffiliated the institution, prompting the BCI to strengthen the affiliation process across the country.

According to the BCI, inspection teams will physically verify the institution’s infrastructure, classrooms, library, faculty strength, student facilities, seating capacity, and compliance with all regulatory requirements. Affiliation will be granted only after a satisfactory inspection report.

The Council has also instructed universities to strictly enforce legal education standards, stating that no compromise on infrastructure or regulatory compliance will be tolerated. Institutions found violating prescribed norms may face action in accordance with the law.

The BCI believes that the revised inspection mechanism will enhance the quality of legal education, curb the functioning of substandard institutions, and ensure that law students receive education in a well-equipped and academically sound environment.
