Maharashtra Class 10 Teacher Shortage: Class 10 Students Launch Protest Demanding Teacher Recruitment

Class 10 students from the Zilla Parishad Secondary School in Sonari village, Dharashiv district, Maharashtra, have launched an indefinite protest against the shortage of teachers. With board examinations fast approaching and a prolonged lack of regular subject teachers, the students have left their classrooms to stage a sit-in protest outside the office of the Zilla Parishad's Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Parents, teachers, and local residents have also joined them. 

Students allege that several teaching and non-teaching staff positions at the Zilla Parishad Secondary School in Sonari village have remained vacant for nearly four years.

They claim that against submitting numerous written appeals to the administration during this period, no effective steps have been taken to recruit regular teachers. So, they have been compelled to launch an indefinite sit-in protest.

The protesting students have said that primary school teachers are currently being assigned the responsibility of teaching secondary-level classes. In their view, subject-specific, good teachers are crucial for students appearing in the Class 10 board examinations. Therefore, instead of relying on temporary arrangements, qualified subject teachers must be recruited for secondary schools on a regular basis.

Local residents claim that the shortage of teachers at the school is not a new issue. Regular academic activities have been disturbed for nearly 4 years due to multiple vacant posts. Students preparing for board examinations are the ones most affected by this situation.

The day before the indefinite sit-in protest began, villagers staged a protest by locking the school. Their aim was to draw the administration's attention and demand a fast resolution to the long-standing teacher shortage. Locals allege that the lack of teachers has severely compromised the educational environment.

During the protest, students held up various placards and chanted slogans. One of their key messages was: "You have saved the girls; now provide teachers for their education."

They also mentioned Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s famous call—"Educate, Organise, and Agitate"—stating that they had launched the movement to ensure the fundamental right to education.

The students stated that they had submitted written applications on July 28 to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Zilla Parishad, the Education Officer, the District Collector, and the Superintendent of Police (SP). However, they allege that no effective action was taken even after the applications were submitted.

The protesters have clearly said that their sit-in protest will continue until the regular recruitment for all vacant teaching and non-teaching posts in the school is announced. They have confirmed that they will not withdraw from the protest, regardless of how close the board examinations get.

Anxiety is increasing among students as the Class 10 board examinations approach. They make it clear that they are not looking for any special benefits; rather, they simply want teachers who will conduct regular classes and help them prepare for the exams.

I believe that the presence of subject-specific teachers is crucial during a critical period like the board examinations. Quickly filling long-standing vacancies to ensure quality education for the students would be beneficial for their future.
