Maharashtra Education Overhaul: Eknath Shinde's Mission Mode Plan

Maharashtra Education Overhaul: Eknath Shinde's Mission Mode Plan

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the School Education Department to work in ‘mission mode’ with the aim of bringing about major changes in Maharashtra's education system. His plan places special emphasis on modernising school infrastructure, enhancing teacher training and skills, and ensuring the holistic development of students.

On Saturday, Shinde held a review meeting lasting nearly 4 hours at the Nandanvan Bungalow in Mumbai with School Education Minister Dada Bhuse and senior officials from the education department. Detailed discussions took place during the meeting regarding various schemes and plans of the department and their progress.

During the meeting, Shinde directed the Education Department to formulate a clear, detailed, and time-bound action plan. He emphasised that various educational schemes must reach every school and student in the state, rather than remaining limited only to paper.

He noted that the aspirations and dreams of children are evolving, and the school system must adapt to keep pace with these changes.

Under Shinde's plan, education will not be limited only to the syllabus and examinations; emphasis will also be placed on the physical, mental, intellectual, and emotional well-being of students.

This includes measures such as regular health check-ups, nutrition, and a review of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme. Additionally, the plan outlines necessary measures to address the mental health and emotional well-being of the students.

Shinde has pointed out the need to actively involve parents, alumni, and local communities in school development, rather than relying only on the government.

Local participation in various school development activities can facilitate the quick identification and resolution of important issues.

Instructions have also been issued to more effectively showcase the Education Department's successful plans and work to the general public.

There are plans to make MLAs and MPs more active in the development of schools within their respective areas. They can adopt schools in their constituencies and contribute to their development by utilising available funds and local resources.

The Maharashtra government is also considering using the expertise of the corporate and industrial sectors for school development.

Instructions have been issued to hold weekly review meetings to ensure that the plans are started within the mentioned timeframe.

These meetings will assess work progress and identify starting issues as well as various bottlenecks. The objective is to facilitate the work by making prompt decisions whenever necessary.

If this plan is started, it could pave the way for changes in several areas within government schools, including:

  • At first modernisation of school infrastructure
  • Teacher training and skill development
  • Recognition of high-performing teachers
  • Increased focus on student health and nutrition
  • Plans for mental health and emotional well-being
  • Participation of parents and the local community
  • School development through MLAs and MPs
  • Technical and professional support from the corporate sector
  • Quick start of educational projects
  • Monitoring progress through weekly reviews

Deputy CM Eknath Shinde has pointed out this ‘mission mode’ plan with the aim of making Maharashtra’s education system more modern, high-quality, and future-ready. Efforts are being made to develop government schools by bringing together teachers, parents, local residents, public representatives, and the corporate sector.
