Maharashtra Government Takes Major Step for Ex Agniveers; 1,000 Posts Approved for Re Employment

In a significant move aimed at supporting Agniveers completing their four year military service, the Maharashtra Government has approved the creation of 1,000 supernumerary posts in various government and semi government establishments.

The decision was announced through a Government Resolution issued by the General Administration Department on August 27, 2026. The move seeks to make effective use of the discipline, skills, leadership qualities, technical training and physical capabilities acquired by Agniveers during their service in the Armed Forces.

Opportunities in Police, Forest and Fire Services

The proposed opportunities for former Agniveers include several uniformed Group C positions.

These may include Police Constables, Driver Police Constables, Prison Police and Guards, Firefighters, Rescuers, various positions in the Home Guards, personnel and vehicle drivers in the State Excise Department, Forest Guards, and Firefighter and Rescuer positions in Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils.

The initiative could provide former Agniveers with an opportunity to put their military training to practical use in areas such as public safety, disaster management, forest protection, firefighting and other public services.

High Level Committee Under the Chief Secretary

To oversee the process, the Maharashtra Government has constituted a high level committee of senior secretaries under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra.

The committee will determine the number of supernumerary posts to be allocated department wise and cadre wise. It will also formulate the procedure for appointing former Agniveers to these posts and recommend a mechanism for subsequently absorbing them into regular government or semi government service.

Senior officials from the Home, Forest, General Administration, Finance, Urban Development, and Law and Judiciary departments have been included in the committee.

Decision Ahead of First Batch of Agniveers Completing Service

The decision comes as the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme is approaching the completion of its four year service period.

Under the Agnipath scheme, approximately 25% of Agniveers may be retained in the Armed Forces on a permanent basis based on performance, discipline and other criteria, while the remaining personnel are released from service after four years.

Recognising the need for timely rehabilitation and employment opportunities for those completing their service, the Maharashtra Government has decided to create supernumerary posts as an interim arrangement while detailed service entry rules and policies are being formulated.

What Happens Next?

The high level committee will identify the departments and cadres where the 1,000 posts will be allocated and will determine the selection and appointment procedure.

Following the committee’s recommendations, the respective administrative departments will issue orders for the creation of the supernumerary posts.

Importantly, the Government Resolution states that fresh approval from the Finance Department will not be required for creation of these posts once the committee has finalised the allocation.

The decision marks a significant step towards utilising the military training and experience of former Agniveers in Maharashtra’s public service system. The department wise distribution of the 1,000 posts and the detailed recruitment procedure are expected to be announced as the process moves forward.
