Maharashtra Govt Directs Withdrawal of Cases Against Students Who Joined NEET Protest

In a significant decision, the Maharashtra Government’s Home Department has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra, to initiate the legal process for withdrawing criminal cases registered against students and youth who participated in protests held across the state in support of the NEET (UG) agitation at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.

The official communication states that the decision has been taken in accordance with earlier Government Resolutions issued by the State Government.

According to the letter, no adverse administrative or disciplinary action should be taken against students, youth, or other individuals solely for participating in the protest. The Home Department has further instructed police authorities to complete the legal formalities for withdrawing the registered cases as per the prescribed legal procedure.

The protests were organised in support of the nationwide movement demanding action over the alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination. Several students and youth had reportedly faced criminal cases following demonstrations held in different districts of Maharashtra.

The latest directive is expected to provide relief to affected students, ensuring that pending legal proceedings do not adversely impact their education, career opportunities, or future government employment.

The communication was issued by the Home Department, Government of Maharashtra, on 31 July 2026 and has been forwarded to the Director General of Police, Maharashtra for necessary action.
