Major Update on Sonam Wangchuk's Health After His 20-Day Fast: What Did Safdarjung Hospital Say?

A recently released official medical update regarding the health condition of social activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has once again become a focal point of discussion. Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi issued a case summary concerning his health on July 18, 2026. It said that, due to a prolonged fast, he exhibited signs of dehydration, low potassium levels, and the presence of ketones. However, he was conscious upon admission, and his pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen levels were stable.

According to the case summary released by VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, 59 year old Sonam Wangchuk was brought to the hospital by the Delhi Police at 7:40 AM on July 18, 2026.

Medical records indicate that he had not consumed solid food for approximately 20 days. This prolonged fast resulted in general physical weakness; however, there was no history of him losing attention before his admission to the hospital.

According to the hospital report, Sonam Wangchuk was fully conscious at the time of admission. Doctors noted that his pulse and blood pressure were stable, and oxygen saturation was normal; however, signs of mucosal dryness and decreased skin turgor indicating dehydration were observed. These findings could be linked to the prolonged absence of adequate food and fluid intake.

According to information provided by the hospital, the blood tests have revealed several significant findings. These are:

• Signs of compensated acidosis.
• Blood potassium level was 2.9 mEq/L, which is below the normal range.
• Repeat testing showed a serum potassium level of 2.92 mEq/L.
  Blood sugar level was 78 mg/dL.
• Upon admission, urine ketones were 1+, rising to 3+ by 1:00 PM.

According to the doctors, the results of these tests are consistent with the physiological changes caused by prolonged fasting.

The medical report states that doctors advised providing intravenous fluids to him. However, according to the report, Sonam Wangchuk did not give permission to receive intravenous fluids, nor did he accept oral rehydration fluids or any other medication.

The hospital has stated that although he declined to undergo certain parts of the treatment, he is being kept under regular observation and is being consistently advised to receive the necessary medical care.
