4,000 PE Teacher Vacancies in Maharashtra; Irritation Mounts Over Recruitment Freeze Spanning Over a Decade

4,000 PE Teacher Vacancies in Maharashtra; Irritation Mounts Over Recruitment Freeze Spanning Over a Decade

In Maharashtra, while the nation celebrates its successes in the international sporting arena on one hand, many qualified Physical Education (PE) teachers in the state have been awaiting employment for a prolonged period on the other. Allegations have surfaced that the recruitment of PE teachers in government schools has effectively been halted for over a decade. The protesting teachers claim that approximately 4,000 positions currently lie vacant. Therefore, they have decided to stage a protest at Azad Maidan on April 27th to highlight this issue.

The reason for writing about this matter is that physical education contains far more than just sports; it constitutes a vital component of students' physical, mental, and social development. If schools lack trained teachers, how are the athletes of the future to be brought up? In my view, this is not only an issue concerning job aspirants; it is a fundamental question regarding the entire education system.

According to teachers' associations, there are currently approximately 4,000 vacant posts for Physical Education (PE) teachers across the state. This shortage is particularly acute in Zilla Parishad (ZP) schools located in rural areas. The protesting teachers assert that the last recruitment drive for PE teachers took place in 2014; since then, no major new recruitment process has been begun. Although a government decision in January 2025 had outlined plans for new recruitments, it is rumoured that, in reality, the process has yet to commence.

Many ZP schools lack dedicated PE or Arts teachers. Consequently, teachers responsible for teaching regular academic subjects are now compelled to manage the organisation of Sports Days, general sports activities, and co-curricular programs. As one Headmaster noted, this situation cannot be sustained indefinitely. This shortage of teachers is having a direct impact on the students. In many schools, the absence of a sports teacher means that PE periods have effectively become idle time—periods spent merely loitering on the field without any structured training. In my opinion, this results in the waste of opportunities for students to develop their talents.

According to the demands of the teachers' association, the plan was to appoint one Physical Education (PE) teacher for every 250 students, with at least one such teacher assigned to every ZP Central School. However, this plan has yet to be applied. Consequently, many qualified PE teachers have been compelled to work in private schools, as the prolonged absence of government recruitment has left them with no other viable alternatives. Many have even had to relocate to distant places to take up jobs offering low salaries.

Due to a prolonged lack of recruitment, many job seekers now face the anxiety of exceeding the age limit. Many may subsequently have to seek age relaxation. This is a matter of grave concern for job seekers.
