The Union Cabinet has approved a significant change to the Agnipath recruitment framework, giving Agniveers who are not selected for regular enrolment after their initial four-year service an additional two-year engagement opportunity. The decision creates a further pathway for eligible and willing personnel to enter the regular cadre of the Indian Defence Forces.
Under the revised arrangement, 25 per cent of Agniveers will continue to be considered for regular employment after completing their initial four-year tenure, based on merit. The remaining 75 per cent will now have the opportunity to undertake another two-year period of service.
At the end of the additional engagement period, these Agniveers will also be offered an opportunity for enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to their willingness and fulfilment of the prescribed selection criteria.
Two-stage opportunity for regular enrolment
The revised framework introduces an additional opportunity for Agniveers who would previously have completed their four-year tenure without entering the regular forces.
The arrangement provides two pathways:
First pathway: 25 per cent of Agniveers will be offered regular employment based on merit after their initial four-year engagement.
Second pathway: The remaining 75 per cent will be offered another two-year engagement period, after which they can be considered for regular enrolment, subject to eligibility and selection requirements.
The revised arrangement does not make permanent enrolment automatic. Candidates will still need to satisfy the applicable criteria and demonstrate their willingness to continue serving.

Higher remuneration and improved service benefits
The additional two-year engagement period will come with improved financial and service-related benefits.
The revised provisions include:
Higher remuneration during the second engagement period.
An enhanced Seva Nidhi package.
Seniority-related benefits.
These changes are intended to provide greater continuity and improved career prospects for Agniveers who wish to remain in military service.
Four years of implementation and performance assessment
The decision follows an assessment of the Agnipath scheme after four years of implementation. Feedback regarding the performance of Agniveers and the organisational requirements of the Defence Forces has contributed to the revised framework.
The assessment highlighted several developments associated with the scheme, including:
Expansion of Agniveer recruitment across districts throughout the country.
Greater standardisation and transparency in recruitment procedures.
Positive performance in physical fitness, discipline, motivation and competitive spirit.
Improvements in professional skills, technological adaptability and education.
Opportunities for women to enter additional branches of the Defence Forces.
The performance assessment also considered operational efficiency and the requirements of the military organisation.

Agnipath scheme to continue under revised framework
The latest Cabinet decision retains the Agnipath scheme while introducing an additional service opportunity for the 75 per cent of Agniveers who were previously expected to leave after their initial engagement period.
The revised framework seeks to balance the aspirations of young personnel with the Defence Forces' requirement for trained, motivated and technologically adaptable manpower.
For Agniveers approaching the completion of their initial four-year service, the additional two-year engagement period represents an important change in their career options.
The new arrangement creates a broader route towards regular military service, although final enrolment will remain dependent on willingness, merit and the applicable selection requirements.
