The Maharashtra government has prepared to introduce new legislation aimed at regulating private coaching centres. Simultaneously, to ensure the more effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, it has been announced that greater emphasis will be placed on ability-based education, industry-oriented training, and research.
According to the government, these measures will play a crucial role in making the education system more transparent, modern, and employment-oriented.
In response to a discussion on education in the Legislative Assembly, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse announced that a new bill to regulate private coaching centres would be introduced in the upcoming session.
He noted that the coaching industry is currently expanding rapidly. So, the state government plans to bring these institutions under a specific regulatory framework to ensure transparency and accountability in their operations.
Although the detailed provisions of the proposed legislation have not yet been disclosed, the government's objective is to safeguard the interests of students and establish effective control of the coaching sector.
Certain regulations are already in place for private schools in the state. Current rules impose specific controls on fee collection by private schools and mandate a minimum student enrollment of 30 for urban schools and 20 for rural schools to obtain government recognition. The government believes that a similar policy framework is required for coaching centres as well.
Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil has said that the state government is accelerating the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He noted that the new policy places special emphasis on education in the mother tongue, skill-based learning, practical training, and a job-oriented education system; schools, colleges, and universities have already been provided with a specific roadmap for implementing this policy.
The Minister further stated that around 50 of the world's leading universities could set up campuses under the proposed EduCity project in Navi Mumbai. Work on land allocation for this project is already underway. The primary objective of this initiative is to create opportunities for world-class higher education.
This initiative by the Maharashtra government is not limited only to regulating coaching centres; rather, it is part of a broader plan to make the entire education system more modern, capacity-based, and employment-oriented. New legislation, the effective implementation of NEP 2020, and efforts to build world-class educational infrastructure could bring about positive changes for students and educational institutions in the future.
