Announcement to Withdraw the ‘Cockroach’ Youth Movement Following the Education Minister Resignation

A major turning point has been reached in the long-standing student-youth movement protesting the nationwide leaking of examination question papers. Following Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's announcement that he would submit his resignation, the movement led by the 'Cockroach Janta Party' (CJP) declared that it was calling off the anxiety "as a gesture of goodwill." The protesters claim that all their key demands were accepted following discussions with the government; however, full details of these terms have not yet been officially released.

On Saturday, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced in a post on the social media platform X (Twitter) that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In his message, he said that he took this decision after considering the current situation and the usual tension across the country. He also expressed respect for the hopes, aspirations, and sentiments of the nation's youth.

Within hours of the Education Minister announcing his resignation, Ashutosh Ranka, spokesperson for the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), stated that the movement's core demands had been accepted following discussions with the government.

He urged the protesters to return home peacefully, adding that the time had come to call off the agitation.

However, a detailed official announcement regarding exactly which demands would be met and how had not yet been released by the government.

Following the announcement of the protest's withdrawal, many protesters in Delhi's Jantar Mantar area expressed their joy.

The national anthem was played, the gathered crowd chanted "Jai Hind," and people exchanged greetings while sharing sweets. Media reports also mention similar celebrations taking place in several other cities across the country.

Social activist Sonam Wangchuk described this development as a success for the peaceful movement, stating that the change came about as a result of patience and a non-violent stance.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi welcomed the Education Minister's resignation but demanded accountability regarding those injured during the movement and the allegations of the use of force.

Among the protests, the central government announced initiatives for a fast-track judicial process to regulate question paper leaks and expressed its intention to introduce new legislation to combat corruption in the examination system. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the incidents of question paper leaks in a personal video message and sure that strict action would be taken.

Issues such as transparency in the examination system, job opportunities, a stance against corruption, and government accountability have come to the forefront of discussion through this movement. At the same time, there has been deep discussion regarding the roles played by social media, student organisations, and peaceful protests in this event.
