Holidays May Extend Until June 26: School Reopening Date in Maharashtra Could Be Postponed Due to Intense Heat

ntense risk has arisen in Maharashtra that the scheduled date for reopening schools may be postponed this year due to the severe heat and a heatwave alert issued by the IMD. Specifically, in light of the alarming heatwave conditions in the Vidarbha region, the Maharashtra government is considering delaying the reopening of schools from June 15 to June 26. Temperatures in several districts have already neared the 47°C mark, raising significant concerns regarding the health and safety of students.

Sources within the School Education Department indicate that discussions regarding this decision are underway, with the safety of students being accorded the highest priority. Education Minister Pankaj Bhoyar stated that if the situation does not improve even after June 10, the reopening date for schools in the Vidarbha region may be pushed back. Currently, parents, teachers' associations, and health experts are also advocating for a delayed reopening of schools, citing the prevailing heat conditions.

Typically, schools in Maharashtra reopen in mid-June following the conclusion of the summer vacation. However, the situation is extremely different this year. Over the past few days, several districts in Vidarbha have witnessed record-breaking heatwave conditions. In the Brahmapuri area of Chandrapur district, temperatures have soared to 47.2°C, ranking among the highest temperatures recorded in the country.

Given this situation, adjustments have been made not only to school schedules but also to university examination timings. Nagpur University has already decided to conduct examinations in the morning rather than in the afternoon. This clearly demonstrates that the administration is treating this matter with the top seriousness.

In Which Districts has a Heatwave Alert Been Issued?

District Situation
Bhandara High Temperature
Gondia High Temperature
Chandrapur (Brahmapuri) Temperature of 47.2°C Recorded
Gadchiroli Severe Heat Conditions
Nagpur Orange Alert
Yavatmal Orange/ Red Alert
Akola Red Alert

According to government sources, young students face the highest health risks during periods of intense heat. Maintaining regular school timings during the afternoon hours may show difficult. This is particularly true in rural areas, where many schools lack enough cooling facilities. The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has also raised questions regarding this matter. The court has sought an explanation as to why plans are being made to reopen schools starting June 15, given that temperatures are currently hovering between 42°C and 44°C.

School Education Minister Pankaj Bhoyar stated that the government is keeping a close watch on the situation. A final decision will be taken after reviewing the weather conditions following June 10. He further added that the government places the maximum priority on the safety and health of the students. If necessary, the reopening date will be postponed.
