Law Students Must Sign Social Media Undertaking Before Admission and Internships:BCI

New Delhi: Law students across the country will now have to follow stricter social media guidelines as part of their academic and professional journey. Under the new regulations, students will be required to submit a written undertaking before taking admission to a law college and again before beginning every internship, confirming that they will use social media responsibly and uphold professional ethics.

As per the new norms, students will not be allowed to share photographs, videos, or any digital content related to court proceedings, lawyers’ chambers, client meetings, legal documents, or other confidential professional activities on social media. Creating vlogs, reels, or “day in court” content from court premises or internship workplaces will also be prohibited.

The move is aimed at protecting the dignity of the legal profession while ensuring confidentiality and ethical conduct. With the growing trend of students posting internship experiences and courtroom-related content online, the new guidelines seek to prevent the misuse of sensitive legal environments for personal publicity or social media engagement.

Law colleges and universities have also been directed to properly inform students about these rules. Institutions are expected to conduct orientation sessions and awareness programmes so that students clearly understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality and professional discipline throughout their legal education and internships.

Legal education experts believe the new framework will help instill ethical values and professional responsibility among aspiring lawyers from the very beginning of their careers. They emphasize that internships are meant to provide practical learning and legal exposure, not to generate social media content or build an online personal brand.

The new regulations are expected to strengthen professional standards in legal education while encouraging students to maintain the integrity, discipline, and confidentiality that the legal profession demands.
