Maharashtra Board Takes a Major Step Towards Digital Exams: Are Paperless Exams on the Horizon?

Indications of a major shift in school education are emerging in Maharashtra. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has announced plans to gradually transition the Class 10 and Class 12 examinations to a digital mode in the future. The primary objective behind this decision is to minimise paper consumption and reduce the environmental footprint. The integration of technology into board examinations has already started, paving the way for these significant future changes.

We are writing about this subject because it is not only an administrative decision; rather, it has the potential to fundamentally alter the very nature of future examinations for students. It is crucial for current students to be aware of this development, as the entire examination methodology could undergo a complete transformation within the next few years. Therefore, it is essential to understand the various facets of this coming change in advance.

The Board has already undertaken several new initiatives. This year, a pilot project was conducted in Baramati under the Pune division during the Class 12 examinations. Under this initiative, question papers were securely delivered to examination centres using "digital trunks." Following the success of this method, plans are now underway to implement it across the entire state. Furthermore, there are plans to conduct practical examinations digitally using a virtual lab system developed by C-DAC.

Board Chairman Trigun Kulkarni stated that, for the Class 12 examinations alone, approximately 109.2 million pages of question papers and answer sheets had to be printed. This consumed nearly 223 metric tons of paper. Additionally, over 10.6 million answer sheets were printed, utilising approximately 1,700 metric tons of paper. The use of such a massive quantity of paper places a significant strain on the environment; consequently, a transition toward digital examinations in the future is now considered to be the need of the hour.

Alongside this change, another significant decision has been taken. From now on, instead of separate mark sheets and certificates, a single joined document will be issued. This new document will include: the student's name (as per Aadhaar), a photograph, and a barcode. According to the Board, this new system will result in savings of approximately ₹3 crore and will make it possible to issue certificates within 15 days of the publication of results.
