The Government of Maharashtra has launched a special year-long program to mark the 200th birth anniversary of the great social reformer, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid homage at the memorial of the Phule couple in Khanwadi, Pune, and inaugurated a series of special educational initiatives. Through this attempt, plans are being prepared to further strengthen social awareness, educational standards, and cultural activities within schools across the state of Maharashtra.
We are writing about this subject today because Mahatma Phule's ideology remains deeply intertwined with our society even to this day. His contributions toward women's education, the pursuit of justice, and the cause of social equality continue to serve as a source of inspiration for us. It is crucial for today's students to be well-informed about these matters; it is in the spirit of this objective that we have highlighted this significant information.
Under this program, a wide range of educational and social activities will be organised throughout the year. The School Education Department has formulated a comprehensive plan bounding social awareness campaigns, various educational events, and cultural programs, all of which will be implemented in every school across the state.
Furthermore, new educational initiatives have been undertaken within the schools, including special measures designed to help reading habits among students. School libraries will be upgraded to serve as 'Knowledge Centres,' and new books focusing on the life and works of Mahatma Phule will be added to their collections. Consequently, students will have the opportunity to acquire broader knowledge, extending beyond the scope of their standard textbooks.
State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the ‘Jyoti Savitri Zilla Parishad School’ complex in Khanwadi, where he toured an educational exhibition. He engaged in various interactions with the students there. Such direct engagement serves to significantly boost the students' self-confidence. Therefore, to further kindle this inspiration, various academic programs will be organised based on the ideals of the Phules. These events—including lectures, webinars, seminars, and group discussions—will emphasise their core philosophy: women's education, social justice, and equality.
