Maharashtra Extends SIT Probe Deadline in Shalarth Salary Irregularities Case

The Maharashtra Government has extended the tenure of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing alleged irregularities in the Shalarth system related to the inclusion of ineligible teaching and non-teaching employees for salary payments.

According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued by the School Education Department on July 24, 2026, the SIT has been granted an additional two months to complete its investigation. The committee will now submit its final report by August 7, 2026.

The SIT was constituted to investigate allegations that names of ineligible employees were unlawfully included in the Shalarth salary system, resulting in the release of government salaries in violation of prescribed rules. The investigation aims to determine the extent of the irregularities, identify those responsible, and recommend appropriate administrative and legal action.

The government stated that the extension was necessitated due to changes in the leadership of the investigation. Following the transfer of the SIT chief to another senior government assignment, additional time was considered necessary to ensure the probe is completed comprehensively.

The Shalarth case has drawn widespread attention across Maharashtra, as the online portal is used for salary disbursement and service records of teachers and non-teaching staff in aided educational institutions. The findings of the SIT are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening transparency, accountability, and integrity in the state’s education administration.
