Major Changes to Teacher Recruitment Via the Pavitra Portal in Maharashtra

The state government has released a significant update for thousands of candidates awaiting teacher recruitment in Maharashtra. On July 24, 2026, the School Education Department issued a corrigendum introducing changes to certain key rules regarding teacher recruitment via the 'Pavitra Portal'.

Specifically, new guidelines have been issued regarding the educational and professional qualifications required for teaching positions in semi-English medium schools, as well as the candidate selection process. This change will have a direct impact on future recruitment drives.

The School Education Department of the Maharashtra government has announced a change to a specific section of the government decision regarding teacher recruitment issued on January 20, 2026. Under the new change, clearer guidelines will be followed to determine the educational and professional qualifications of candidates for teaching positions in semi-English medium schools.

The change states that, in agreement with the rules of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) and the government decision dated February 13, 2013, the rules regarding the academic qualifications, professional qualifications, and the Teacher Eligibility Test for primary school teachers (Classes I to VIII) shall also apply to schools operating under the semi-English medium.

The government has clarified that when selecting teachers for the semi-English sections across classes 1 to 5, 6 to 8, and 9 to 10, importance will be given not only to the English medium but also to the primary medium of instruction of the respective school.

In other words, if a school operates in Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, or any other medium, the medium in which the candidate completed their own schooling or the language they studied as a second language will also be taken into account during the recruitment process.

The change requires that for the 'semi-English' section (Grades 1 to 5), preference will be given to candidates who have obtained their professional qualifications through the English medium, in accordance with general rules.

However, if sufficient qualified candidates from reserved social categories are not found and vacancies remain, a fresh notification will be issued. In such an event, candidates who did not obtain their professional qualifications through the English medium but who studied Science in Class 12 or hold a B.A/ M.A (English) or B.Sc/ M.Sc degree will also be eligible to apply and may be considered as qualified candidates.

The School Education Department of the Government of Maharashtra issued this change on July 24, 2026. The notification states that it has been published on the government website and approved via an official digital signature. The change modifies a specific part of the government decision regarding teacher recruitment issued on January 20, 2026.
