NCC-PMIS Pilot in Maharashtra Shows a New Path for Youth Employment

The joint initiative between the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) in Maharashtra could set a new standard for youth employment and skill development in India. Recently, over a hundred young men and women secured internship opportunities at various industrial establishments through a pilot camp organised with the collaboration of the Maharashtra NCC Directorate, corporate partners, and the central government.

This initiative represents not only the start of a career for a few students, but a potential model for the country's transition from education to employment in the future.

Approximately 183 candidates participated in the PMIS camp held in Maharashtra. Following the interviews, 64 individuals were selected for internships across various sectors. The selected candidates secured opportunities in departments such as hospitality, finance, sales, food and beverage, and front office operations.

Additionally, around 150 internship opportunities were created, marking a successful example of collaboration between government and private sector organisations.

With approximately 20 lakhs cadets spread across more than 700 districts in India, the NCC has long been promoting leadership, discipline, and a sense of social responsibility. This pilot project has confirmed that it is also possible to connect young people with the industrial sector by utilising the same infrastructure.

Applying government programs through already established and trusted organisations can be more effective than creating entirely new structures.

Representatives from Lemon Tree Hotels participating in this program stated that, alongside technical skills, qualities such as self-confidence, discipline, and interpersonal communication abilities are equally important for job applicants. In their experience, these traits have been clearly evident among NCC cadets.

The PMIS action has created an opportunity to connect directly with talented youth from across the country, which will help build a skilled workforce for the future.

Various government skill development and employment-oriented schemes are already in place. However, the biggest challenge is extending these opportunities to students and young people in remote areas. This initiative from Maharashtra shows that employment opportunities can be significantly expanded through the coordination of government schemes, educational institutions, and industrial organisations.

Although this pilot project is currently limited to two cities in Maharashtra, its results have already drawn the attention of policymakers. Similar actions could be applied in other states across the country in the future, based on the experience gained in Maharashtra. This would improve the effectiveness of government programs and provide employment opportunities to more young people.
