Several months before NEET, students across India enter into the same routine year after year. Phones go silent. Social media is deleted. Sleep is sacrificed. Study material is prioritized. In places like Kota, Delhi, Patna, and Hyderabad, students only focus on preparing for and taking India’s toughest medical entrance exam.
With the increase in competition and pressure, a new word has been introduced into the NEET conversation. Paper leak.
This issue started getting its fair share of the spotlight in 2017, with the complaints of irregularities and confusions following the state NEET examinations. While the issues did not become national news, most students can remember the rumors that circulated, even during the exam’s final moments. Some would claim that some of the questions were already leaked to private groups.
Seeing and hearing these things added a new level of stress to the already difficult situation that students were in.
A former NEET aspirant from Bihar is always going to have those memories. When he thinks of those days, the students who lived in the same hostel kept on associating rumors and circulating stories as to whether the exam was leaked to some of the students.
People of his age hoped that with new advancements the system would get stronger and the issues go away. The exact opposite happened in 2024.
After the exam, social media became flooded with claims of leaked papers, audio clips, and screenshots. Telegram channels instantly became a part of the national discourse. Many students and parents began to question why some exam centers had seemingly strange scoring patterns. Within days, and for many students, the shocking news spurred peaceful protests in multiple cities.
Many students went for two to three years, taking NEET classes to prep for the exam. For many, passing the exam and then going onto Medical school. Many students come from families where they become doctors. This is seen as a great family achievement. Especially in the small cities, it was a source of family pride and financial stability.
One student from Nagpur said the news of the dragging controversy spread like wildfire on social media after the exam and affected him the most. He had caused a lot of mental strain on himself to study for NEET for almost 14 months straight, he did not attend any family functions or gatherings. He said after all the hard work, he believed the exam was meant to achieve for a reason. He stated, “You were made to think like he was”.
Parents too were losing their calm for their children.
In the classroom and outside of all the coaching centers, this was all that was heard: "Why is there so much controversy, when children are all so honest in their prep?”
By 2026, they assured stricter security and reinforced monitoring. The students heard of new measures to stop illegal activities. It was said that stricter procedures were adopted at the checking stations, and that digital monitoring was introduced.
For a while, there was an illusion of regained faith.
Then there were new reports.
Shortly after the exam, the internet was flooded with posts about “guess papers” and questions asked. Investigative news reports said that the monitoring agents were checking whether there was an access to the questions before the exam among the coaching operators and some of the online channels.
It is easy to imagine that the students were at the epicenter of the storm of confusion.
The emotional turmoil of NEET on aspirants is terrible. NEET aspirants often have to study with the expectations from the family and society. In most cases preparing for the NEET exam also causes a shift in the family routine. Parents sometimes even go as far as to take loans to finance tutoring, along with everything else, with the hope that their child will earn a government position in the field of medical services.
This is why forensics adjacent to education should be focused on leaks.
Exams are about gaining confidence. Marks received reflect the student's level of preparation, not the class's or school's connections. As students ask about justice, they're losing credibility.
Disputes have been found to adversely affect students because of the anxiety which is anticipated due to periodic engagement in NEET, worse is the mental strain students suffer because of the uncertainty surrounding exams.
However, the enthusiasm to prepare remains remarkable.
Coaching continuie and libraries are late night sesstions. Each day begins early with solving mock exams. Student's dreams remain valuable, even with the disruptions.
In addition, NEET is every student's story. When they exam every year, they solidify their commitment to the hope in defense of the descent around them.
