Protests Explode Over Fee Hike at Navi Mumbai School; Parents Anger Even After Reduction from 25% to 19%

Parental anger over a fee hike at a large school in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, has escalated significantly. The school authorities initially decided to raise fees by 25%, prompting parents to take to the streets in protest. Following the agitation, the school reduced the hike to 19%. However, the parents remain unsatisfied; they argue that the fee increase should be capped at a maximum of 15%. With a student body of approximately 4,600, this issue has now become a major focal point of discussion.

Rising school fees have emerged as a significant burden for many families. As the cost of education continues to climb, the financial pressure on the common people has also increased. In my view, whenever such decisions are made without transparent dialogue between the school administration and the parents, it is only natural for disagreement to arise.

Allegations have surfaced that this school in Kharghar suddenly decided to hike fees by 25%. A section of parents has claimed that no proper consultation took place prior to this decision. Consequently, many families, angered by the move, took to the streets in protest. Following the parents' agitation, the school authorities reduced the fee hike from 25% to 19%—marking a total reduction of 6%. Parents claim that, in some instances, the fees were lowered by approximately ₹500 or even more.

The school principal has stated that fees have been reduced by 6%; the entire process was scrutinised by education officials, and the decision falls within the limits prescribed by Maharashtra's education laws. They declare that this increase was implemented in strict compliance with the regulations. The school authorities have further clarified that this fee hike remains within the permissible limits set down by the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation Fee) Act. This legislation was primarily approved to regulate fee structures within educational institutions and to prevent the collection of unauthorised or excessive charges.

Although the fee hike has been reduced, parents remain unsatisfied. Their primary claim is that the increase is excessive—making it difficult for families to manage in the current economic climate—and that the hike should not exceed 15%. In my view, the parents' fundamental demand is not only for a reduction, but rather for the establishment of a reasonable rate.
