Nagpur Social Welfare Department says hostel admission advertisement was issued strictly as per government reservation policies and existing Government Resolutions.

The Social Welfare Department has issued a clarification regarding a recently published government hostel admission advertisement that sparked discussions over category-wise reservation and seat allocation. Officials have stated that the advertisement was prepared in accordance with long-standing government policies and reservation norms governing hostel admissions across Maharashtra.
According to the department, admissions to government hostels operated under the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department are regulated by Government Resolutions issued from May 16, 1984, onwards. These resolutions provide for specific reservations within the Scheduled Caste category, including earmarked seats for students belonging to the Mang and Mehtar communities.
The department clarified that in municipal corporation and Class-A municipal areas, 14 percent of Scheduled Caste reserved seats are allocated to Mang and Mehtar students, while at district and taluka levels, 10 percent of seats are reserved for these communities. The reservation structure continues to be implemented under existing government rules.
Officials also pointed out that a Government Resolution issued on March 10, 2025 introduced horizontal reservations for persons with disabilities and orphan students across all categories. While this led to changes in the overall reservation framework, hostel admissions continue to be processed under the applicable reservation provisions and government guidelines.
Addressing concerns over the advertisement, the department stated that the notice was intended only to provide transparent information about category-wise vacant seats. The advertisement was prepared based on government-prescribed reservation patterns and admission procedures and does not introduce any new reservation policy.
The Social Welfare Department further noted that similar category-specific advertisements have been published in previous years and that the same admission process is being followed uniformly across Maharashtra.
Assistant Commissioner of Social Welfare, Nagpur, Sukeshini Telgote, said the advertisement was issued in compliance with government directives and that all admissions are being conducted according to established rules and reservation policies.
The clarification aims to address public concerns and ensure transparency in the hostel admission process for the academic year 2026–27.
