The Union Ministry of Education is poised to undertake a major initiative to further expand the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within India's education sector. A special session titled "Ministry of Education – Pushing the Frontier of AI in India" is being organised as part of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, where discussions will focus on the future of AI technology within the country's educational ecosystem.
This vital session is scheduled to take place on February 17th at Bharat Mandapam. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, along with the Minister of State for Education and Skill Development, Jayant Chaudhary, will also be present at the event.
Currently, AI is no longer confined only to the world of technology; rather, it is rapidly making advances into diverse fields such as schools, colleges, research institutions, and skill development initiatives. This subject is expected to have huge significance for students, educators, and educational institutions alike.
I am writing on this topic because, over the coming years, AI has the potential to fundamentally transform the very nature of education. In particular, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 and the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision, AI-driven education has now come out as one of the government's top priorities.
To facilitate the use of AI in the education sector, the government has established a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education at IIT Madras. This centre places particular focus on AI-based education, research, and teacher training.
According to the government, the use of AI will make it possible to further enhance aspects such as personalised learning, smart assessment, adaptive teaching, and digital classrooms. In the future, AI technology could also make students' learning processes more accessible and effective.
During this special session hosted by the Ministry of Education, detailed discussions will be held on how to more effectively integrate AI into India's education system. Past only policy formulation, various models for the practical application of AI, along with relevant government initiatives, will be showcased.
The government has already developed a range of digital platforms and policies to facilitate the use of AI across school education, higher education, research, and skill development. This session will primarily highlight the progress of these plans as well as future plans.
Several famous figures from the country's education and technology sectors will participate in this special discussion. Among them are: Sridhar Vembu, Founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation; Vibhu Mittal, Technologist at Inflexion; Rajan Anandan, Managing Director at Peak XV Partners; Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur; V. Kamakoti; and Sunita Sarawagi.
The discussion will be modified by Manoj S. Gaur, Director of IIT Jammu.
