The Supreme Court has announced a significant decision regarding the NEET UG 2026 re-examination. The Court declined to hear, on an urgent basis, a petition requesting that the NEET UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21 be conducted via a Computer-Based Test (CBT) or online mode, rather than through the offline method.
Therefore, for the time being, the examination will proceed as originally planned, utilising the pen and paper or offline format. The Court stated that the matter would be listed for a hearing following the summer vacation and that, at this juncture, no instructions are being issued to alter the examination methodology.
The Supreme Court's Vacation Bench, comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Aravind Kumar, declined to entertain the plea for an urgent hearing. The Court observed that the National Testing Agency (NTA) is already in the middle of extensive preparations to conduct the re-examination on June 21, 2026.
Under these circumstances, it would not be careful to step in by altering the examination procedure. The demand for a CBT (Computer-Based Test) or online examination remains delayed for the time being.
Following the cancellation of the main NEET UG 2026 examination due to allegations of a question paper leak, several petitioners approached the Supreme Court.
They argued that conducting the examination via a Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode would significantly increase the risks associated with the printing, transportation, and storage of question papers. Furthermore, they claimed that an online format could prove effective in preventing future incidents of question paper leaks. However, the Court did not issue a directive to alter the examination format based on this argument at this stage.
The National Testing Agency has informed the court that even stronger security measures will be implemented for the re-examination compared to the previous instance.
It has been stated that additional precautions will be taken regarding the security of question papers, the monitoring of examination centres, and transportation arrangements. The objective of these measures is to uphold the transparency of the examination and minimise the possibility of any irregularities.
In light of the Supreme Court's recent decision, it is now clear that the NEET UG re-examination on June 21, 2026, will be conducted in the offline, or pen and paper, mode. Although a hearing regarding the demand to conduct the examination via the online CBT method is scheduled for a later date, no changes are being introduced for the candidates at this moment. Therefore, the most important priority is to focus on exam preparation.
