Prof. (Dr.) Jyoti Bhakare Takes Charge as Vice-Chancellor of MNLU Nagpur

Prof. (Dr.) Jyoti Bhakare has assumed charge as the Vice-Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur, for a five-year term.

Her appointment was made by the University’s Chancellor, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Atul S. Chandurkar, Judge of the Supreme Court of India. She succeeds Prof. (Dr.) V.P. Tiwari, who was serving as the Acting Vice-Chancellor.

More than three decades of academic and administrative experience 

Prof. Bhakare brings more than 35 years of experience in legal education, administration and professional practice to her new role.

Before joining MNLU Nagpur, she served as Senior Professor and Director of the School of Law at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). During her academic career, she also held responsibilities including Officiating Registrar of SPPU and Head of its Department of Law.

She has additionally served as Officiating Principal of prominent law colleges in Pune, taking on a range of academic and administrative responsibilities.

Expertise in healthcare and technology-related law

Prof. Bhakare’s areas of academic expertise include Science, Technology and Law, Medical Negligence Litigation, and Healthcare Law and Policy.

She holds an LL.M. and a Ph.D. and has seven years of experience in legal practice. Her professional and academic work has also included responsibilities involving higher education, healthcare policy and legal affairs.

She has served as a Visitor’s Nominee, nominated by the President of India, on the Executive Councils of several Central Universities. She has also worked as Legal Advisor to the Government of Maharashtra on matters concerning medical education and health policy.

International and research experience 

Prof. Bhakare is a member of the World Association of Medical Law and has guided numerous doctoral scholars during her academic career.

Her combination of legal practice, university administration, research and policy experience brings a broad academic background to her new position at MNLU Nagpur.

With her appointment, the university will now have a full-time Vice-Chancellor for the five-year term, as the institution continues its academic and institutional activities in legal education.
